Avoid Tailgating
Rear-end collision is the most common type of accident in a highway construction zone. These collisions happen due to vehicles travelling too closely or too fast for the conditions.
-
In order to prevent such accidents, you should leave 5 seconds (approx. 30m) of gap between your vehicle and the leading vehicle.
-
If the vehicle behind you is following too closely, you may warn him:
- by turning the lights on and off several times to illuminate your tail lights during the day time, and
- by tapping the brake pedal lightly to illuminate the brake lights during night time, if the vehicle and situation permit to do so.
-
Do not slam the brakes or reduce the speed drastically unless there is an emergency.
-
Understand the tailgating warning from the vehicle in front and increase the gap between your vehicle and vehicle in front.
